Dylan and I recently relocated to Columbus Ohio! We've set up a wonderful studio and are enthusiastic to continue making our pots! For those of you familiar with Auerbach Studios, we will be glazing our newest works so keep a lookout for gorgeous new finishes that we are currently working hard to formulate. Up until this point, Dylan and I have almost exclusively fired in wood kilns with very minimal glazing. We're excited to see how our work evolves with this new change! It is definitely a time of growth for us. In other news, we got married on April 1st and it was easily the GREATEST!
Night Shifts
When firing in a wood kiln for 5 days, someone must be attending to the kiln at all times. Dylan and I chose the 12am-8am shifts this past week. Working those late night/ early morning shifts allowed for us to enjoy the quiet of the night and listen/ react to the kiln as necessary. It also allowed for a beautiful view of the sun rising up over the mountains each morning. Below is an early morning picture of the kiln!
October 2017 Anagama firing
The October firing went great! Here is a picture I took during the loading of the kiln. In these firings, glazing is very minimal. Most pieces are loaded into the kiln with only a liner glaze on the inside of the piece. Minimal glazing allows the wood ash and the clay body to form the glaze on a piece.
To our readers:
Firing ceramics in a wood kiln takes an enormous amount of preparation, work, and a community of people who are passionate about the process. This blog will give collectors, enthusiasts, and other artists a more extensive look into the wood-firings that we are actively involved in. Enjoy!
